This week the Victorian Government released its response to the ‘Inquiry into the Impact of Social Media on Elections and Electoral Administration.’ The Government is supportive of all of the report’s recommendations which sets an important milestone in State Government leadership on mitigating the impact of misinformation and disinformation on their elections.

The Government’s announcement has also been complimented by polling from The Australia Institute which shows strong public support of these measures.

Comments by Chris Cooper, Executive Director of Reset Australia:

“Reset Australia supports the Victorian Government’s commitment to pursuing new approaches that will ensure greater transparency and accountability of social media platforms in tackling their role in amplifying and distributed misinformation and disinformation during elections.”

“The Government’s statement is further evidence of the clear determination that Australians have for stronger regulation of the social media business model which continues to undermine the integrity of our elections and democratic processes”
