Welcoming a children's privacy code
Reset.Tech Australia welcomes the Government’s introduction of privacy reforms and specifically the commitment to a Children’s Privacy Code.
The successful campaign for a Children’s Privacy Code has been thanks in large part to a committed coalition of organisations who rallied behind a set of key asks (see full list of coalition and asks here). We are thankful to stand with them.
We look forward to working with the Office of the Information Commissioner as they develop a fit-for-purpose Code that brings modern, vital protections to Australian kids.
We commend the Government for listening to feedback from the children’s sector, who have endured an arduous few years of industry-drafted regulation. Industry drafting has led to inconsistent protections and outcomes. Regulators taking on drafting responsibilities for tech policy is a promising development which we strongly encourage across privacy, online safety, and scams.
Comments attributable to Dr Rys Farthing, Director of Policy & Research at Reset.Tech:
“We are delighted to see the Government taking necessary steps to better protect kids online, and crucially, build in interventions to consider their best interests. The digital world has been constructed by companies chasing profit, on an insatiable quest for data. This Code is a welcome first step at trying to put the best interests of children ahead of the greed of tech companies”
