Reset Tech Australia celebrates the passage of the Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024.

This is a vital first step in a long journey towards better privacy protections and data security for Australians.

We especially celebrate the end of ‘co-regulation’ in privacy matters. Industry input has a place, but not in the hot seat holding the drafting pen. More on our work on digital platform regulation and co-regulation in our recent policy briefing: https://au.reset.tech/news/does-digital-co-regulation-function-in-children-s-best-interests/

We are also delighted to see the proposals for Children’s Privacy Code move forward. A Privacy Code is vital to ensuring children’s data remains safe and protected in an increasingly data heavy world. Alongside a coalition of children’s sector organisations, we have been calling for a privacy code for over two years now. The passage of the Bill represents a big step forward for young people.

We look forward to working constructively with the Government in the much anticipated ‘tranche 2’ stage of privacy reforms, and urge both parties to formalise their ambition on muscular privacy reform as election commitments.
